But WHY?

Why is being uncomfortable so scary?

I’m not in danger.

I’m not going to get hurt.

Right??

But the primal part of my brain thinks I am.

Goals that push me: scary.

Learning something new at the age of 39: terrifying.

Being terrible at the new thing I’m learning at the age of 39: panic button.

My primal brain is trying its best to protect me.

It is functioning perfectly!

Our primal brain‘s main function is to keep us alive and it does this through the motivational triad:

Seek pleasure. Avoid pain. Conserve energy.

It makes perfect sense that it wants me to keep hitting the snooze button.

Seek pleasure.

It makes perfect sense that it doesn’t want me to start new goals.

Avoid pain.

And it certainly makes sense that I’m not supposed to try new things at the age of 39.

Conserve energy.

Sound familiar?

The kicker about the primal brain is it doesn’t say these things in a nice way.

It is always a negative tone, a scared tone, even a “if you do this, you may die”, kind of tone.

But you’re not in actual danger.

Now you know, it’s just trying to protect you.

So don’t listen to your primal brain if you aren’t in real danger.

Instead:

Walk through the fear.

Embrace it.

It means you’re evolving. You’re growing.

Let it happen.

It will be amazing.
