Feeling Those Feelings
Feeling our negative emotions is such a foreign thing to many of us.
Most of us want to skip over the crappy feelings and get right back to feeling better.
And I can’t blame anyone for that!
I have good news and bad news about this.
I’ll start with the bad: That’s not how it works. You can’t feel like crap then snap your fingers and truly feel better. You might think you can, but you’re lying to yourself.
The good news: If you don’t try to push the negative feelings away but instead, allow them to be there, you will feel better, faster.
I know, it sounds counterproductive.
It sounds like the opposite of what you should be doing.
But it works.
Feelings are created by our thoughts.
Feelings create a sensation in our body that we can actually describe if we slow down long enough to notice it.
When we allow the negative feelings to be there and we identify the sensation they create in our body, we become familiar with the sensation and our emotions.
And then they don’t seem as scary or daunting to deal with.
If they don’t seem so terrible, maybe we won’t be so quick to try to push them away.
How to:
I like to say: “This is (fill in emotion here) and that’s OK”.
I breathe in the emotion slowly, over and over again, allowing it to be there.
Allowing all the negative thoughts to come, allowing the heaviness of the negativity to just be there with me.
I welcome it.
I notice it in my body. I notice how it feels.
I breathe it in long enough to become familiar with it and be able to describe it.

And then I notice it dissipate.
I notice I feel better. Truly better. Not just telling myself I feel better.
Next time you feel some sort of negative emotion, I invite you to try this for 60 seconds.
Decide to stop and just give it a try.
It will make a difference.
Have an amazing week!
