We Had to Turn Around

We were set to hike Ptarmigan in the Rocky Mountains yesterday. We drove straight from Kansas (pretty flat) to the trailhead (~8500ft elevation).

Ptarmigan is about a 12-mile hike with around 4000ft of elevation gain.

As soon as we started, my heart rate was 150 bpm, I was really struggling and had gone maybe 100ft.

There were all sorts of thoughts running through my head:
“Man! I can’t believe how out of shape I am!”
“What is wrong with me??”
It was really a fun bash session.

And then it occurred to me…the elevation.

I had to take multiple rests; any incline felt like torture. I felt like I had never hiked a day in my life.

Nate looked at me and said, “You know… we don’t have to go to the top.”

“HA!” was my only reply because that’s all I could muster out as I kept trudging forward.

I wanted to quit SO many times because it was harder than I was used to.

I knew I was going to have to put my head down and dig in even more if I wanted to make it to the top.

I realized this simple act of pushing myself was proving so much to myself, especially that I was capable of more.
I knew I was capable of hiking that mountain, it was just going to take longer than I had planned.

I declared to myself that I was going to keep going!!

Then there were storm clouds in the nearby mountains, and thunder and lightning moved in.

So we decided to turn around about 2 miles from the top and run for our lives. 😂

Before the storm rolled in!

Are you ready to show yourself how capable you are? I would love to help.
